Job Description

Customer service workers are used by a variety of companies around the world, and it is their responsibility to serve as a contact point between the company and the customer. The customer service job entails the representative ensuring that the customer gets the help they need; the customer being either an individual or a company.

A customer service representative's job is to interact with the customer, providing information in response to a product or service inquiry, and handling/resolving complaints. Customer service reps communicate either in person, by phone, through email or post, or even by online chat. Some customer service workers are specialized, and some handle general inquiries.

A lot of customer inquiries are just routine requests and questions. For instance, a customer service representative might need to provide a customer with their bank balance, or to check the status of an already-placed order. Getting the answers to those questions isn't usually that labor-intensive; but other matters may be more complicated.

When a customer service agent handles a customer complaint, the representative has to try to resolve the issue in accordance with the company's guidelines. This procedure may entail asking questions in order to determine a complaint's validity, offering a solution, or providing a refund or exchange to a customer. In a lot of cases, the customer service representative is required to follow up with the customer until the issue is fixed.
